Shortened Prayer (Qasar)
Who is entitled to Qasr?
- A traveller who travels in a distance beyond 2 marhalah (48 miles / approximately 80 kilometers)
- A traveller who intends to stay in the place to which he is travelling for four days or less
- A traveller who stays in a location but does not know when he will finish his business and is unable to specify a certain length of stay
The traveller may pray two rak’ahs from when he leaves his city or town, until he returns to it. Jam’ consist of two:
• Jam’ Taqdim
Combine Dhuhr & ‘Asr prayer on Dhuhr timeframe / Combine Maghrib & ‘Isha’ prayer on Maghrib timeframe
• Jam’ Ta’khir
Combine Dhuhr & ‘Asr prayer on ‘Asr timeframe / Combine Maghrib & ‘Isha’ prayer on ‘Isha’ timeframe
Condition for Jam' Taqdim
Start with the first prayer (Dhuhr before ‘Asr / Maghrib before ‘Isha’)
Make niyyah in the first prayer
The prayer services should be performed continuously allowing for no break between them
Remain musafir throughout the prayer
Condition for Jam' Ta'khir
- Have an intention during Dhuhr (or Maghrib) period that the salat will be performed during ‘Asr (or ‘Isha’) time frame.
- Remain musafir throughout the prayer
