Dry Ablution (Tayammum)

Muslims must purify themselves before performing prayers, and as a recommended or obligatory prerequisite to other acts of worship, and this is usually done with water. In the absence of water, the purification can be done with clean sand or dust (Tayammum).

“O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it.”
(Al-Ma’idah: 6)

Reasons for Tayammum

  • If there is no source of water or the amount is insufficient for ablution
  •  Suffering from a health condition that can worsen one’s illness if he uses water
  • You don’t have access to clean water But if you are ill, on a journey, or have relieved yourselves, or been intimate with your wives and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth, wiping your faces and hands. (An Nisa : 43)

(I bear witness that there is no god except Allah Alone, with no partner or associate, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. O Allah, make me one of those who repent and make me one of those who purify themselves. Glory and praise be to You, O Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but You, I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You).

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Like this would have been sufficient,” and saying so, lightly stroked the earth with his hand once and blew it off, then passed his (left) hand over the back of his right hand or his (right) hand over the back of his left hand and then passed them over his face.

[Sahih Al-Bukhari | No. 347; 1/455 of Fath al-Bari]

“Perform Tayammum with clean earth and that will be sufficient for you.” (Sahih Bukhari: 348)
